Altered Images
Introduction
Altered Images
Scenario
King Fairwind of Kida has mysteriously passed away. That same day the heir to the throne, Prince Worthington, disappeared. This tragedy was first blamed on the mysterious Order of the Wolf, a legendary vigilante group that has been plaguing the local baronies. A few days later, a message arrived from a wizard named Kovarth who claimed to be holding the Prince, demanding large sums of gold and magic from the Kingdom. Sareth, the Regent in the absence of a King, has built a party whose mission is to go rescue Prince Worthington from Kovarth's hold.
The party will be led by Prescott the Good, the King's Champion. As King’s Champion Prescott wields great power in the affairs of the land, but also takes great risks on its behalf. Brave adventurers from all over Kida have offered their aid on this vital quest. The party consists of:
Prescott : The King's Champion who will lead the rescue mission.
Hampton : Captain of the Castle Guard.
Terce: A powerful Baron of Kida.
Uvaldo: A Ranger from the mysterious Golden Woods.
Lomar: A member of the wizard's guild who wants to bring Kovarth to justice.
Campbell : A Barbarian adventurer from the northern wastes.
The royal mystics confirmed that all of these people must be members of the party. Volgatha, the chief mystic has learned that for the party to succeed and for any member of the group to be able to achieve his personal goals, all must be present at some critical moment in the quest. Volgatha has volunteered to accompany the party as a guide to lead them to Kovarth.
Bravery and valor on this mission are vital because the new King will choose his own King's Champion, undoubtedly someone who has proven worthy on this quest.
What is Altered Images?
Altered Images is a self contained role-playing game for a Game Master with four to six players. The game emphasizes intrigue, information gathering, puzzle solving and political interaction. Each player has different goals and a specific role to play in the scenario. Though everyone is on a mission together some of the players are deadly enemies (although they don't know it at the outset). The keys to winning the game are the acquisition of knowledge and power, plus the forming of alliances with players who have compatible goals.
What is needed to play?
An assortment of role playing dice (4, 6, 8, 12 and 20 sided)
- Miniatures or markers for use in fights
- Scissors to cut out the various cards the players receive during the game
- Ten to twelve hours of playing time
What is the goal?
The players are all powerful people in the Kingdom of Kida . Ostensibly their goal is to free Prince Worthington from the evil wizard Kovarth. However each player has his own reasons for being on the mission, and the goals of some players are in direct conflict with the goals of others.
How do you play?
Following this introduction is a checklist. When you’re ready to play, use the list to get your players acquainted with the game situation and rules. This should take about twenty minutes. After that the rescue begins!
Do I have to cut up the book?
Pages in this book are perforated so you can take them out easily. If you want to play the game more than once – which would have to be with two different groups of players – or if you just hate the thought of tearing your book apart, you may photocopy the pages. Please be aware that many of the handouts are two sided so you’ll need to do a double sided copy.
What do I need to do as Game Master?
ou play the mystic guide Volgatha who leads the players from Location to Location on the map of Kida. Each time the players come to a new Location read the description of that Location to them. If there is a handout give it to the players so they can puzzle over it. If the Location is a fight bring out the combat map for that Location. If the players win the fight or solve the Riddle Room™ give them the appropriate treasure.
